So, my plan tonight was to make Monastery Lentils (a double batch), in the slow cooker. The problem is, I couldn't find my unopened bag of lentils (I needed 2 cups), and the open bag had about a cup and a half in it. I padded it up with a half-cup of green split peas. I stuck it in the crock with a big can of diced tomatoes, a generous amount of minced garlic, rosemary, thyme, salt, pepper, two bratwursts (sliced and browned in a frying pan), and a chopped onion (sauted in the remaining fat from the brat-pan). 4 cups of beef broth and two cups of water. The house smells heavenly, but even having the glop on high for the last 3 hours, the peas are still hard. Of course, now, I read that split pea soup takes 5-6 hrs in the slow cooker on high.

Except for the peas still being hard, it was really good. I could have sworn I had it tagged in my LJ somewhere, but HERE is the recipe for Monastery Lentils.
  • 1 large can diced tomatoes (not drained)
  • 2 links bratwurst (sliced)
  • 2-ish tablespoons minced garlic
  • 1 large yellow onion, diced
  • 2 cups lentils (rinsed/sorted)
  • 6 cups liquid (stock, ideally, but I used 4 cups beef broth, 2 cups water)
  • 1 cup 5-minute rice
  • Seasonings to taste (salt, pepper, thyme, marjoram)

Brown brats in frying pan. Transfer to slow cooker.

Sautee onion in frying pan, using the leftover fat from the brats. Transfer to slow cooker.

Add everything else except rice directly to slow cooker, and mix. Set cooker to low, and check it in about 4 hours. Or high, and check in 2.5-3 hours.

When lentils are done/almost done, add rice. Continue to cook for another 15 minutes.
